Common Questions

Is the music really played live on old consoles?

Yes. Every show runs on circuit-bent NES units and chip-tuned Game Boys, played live alongside the orchestra. Nothing is pre-recorded or sampled, and the gameplay on the wall is synced in real time.

Do I need to know the games to enjoy it?

Not at all. Half the room is there for the nostalgia and half is hearing these scores for the first time. The projected gameplay gives everyone the story even if you have never held a controller.

How long is a show?

About 90 minutes with no interval, usually eight to ten pieces plus an encore. The Zelda medley alone runs fourteen minutes.

Can I request a score?

You can, through the booking form. We rotate the repertoire by season and arrange everything around what the original console can actually do, so requests go on a list rather than the next setlist.

Can you play a private event or festival?

Yes. Use the booking form and tell us the date, room size, and whether you can supply a projector. We travel with the consoles; we just need power and a wall.

Why the original hardware instead of a synth?

Because the chip strains, drifts, and clips in ways no sampler reproduces, and that grit is the sound people grew up on. Playing it on the gray plastic is the whole point of the ensemble.
